Cronus' system: Against the gods

Chapter 97 The Beast and the Summon

"We appreciate your bravado kid, but you've got to stay back" One of the soldiers stepped forward, glaring fiercely at Lukas. The soldier's hands transformed into that of a beast, claws elongating from each of his fingers.

Rex was shocked at the transformation. so that's the transformation ability uh? Rex took note of it but wait, what? "Why should I stay back while you guys steal my Xps"

The soldier arched an eyebrow in confusion "Kid, do you think this is a video game?"

"Dammit!" Rex facepalmed as he stepped back.

The other soldier squatted, placing his two hands on the ground "We can't allow a student who hasn't even graduated from high school to do our jobs"

Seeing their overly determined expressions, Rex had no other option than to just step back and allow the soldiers show off their skills.

Whoa, Dravok and Dravok? Seems they're brother-in-arms, literally

After seeing their stats, he knew that taking care of Lukas, to them would be no big deal. Jefferson had also told him that Hercules was fighting another Lucius here and from the faint bangs he was hearing outside the academy, he knew that this was true.

Rex sighed, stepping back as the Dravok brothers took center stage. "Fine, fine," he muttered, raising his hands in mock surrender.

Austine, the elder of the two, smirked, his beastly claws gleaming under the flickering lights. "We appreciate the concern, kid, but this isn't your fight anymore." His voice carried a gruff determination as his transformed hands flexed, each claw looking sharp enough to carve through steel.

Beside him, Javen stood with his hands pressed firmly against the ground, the faint hum of summoning magic filling the air. "Just focus on your own mission. We'll handle him," Javen said, his tone calm but authoritative.

Rex glanced at them both, taking a step back toward the exit. "Alright, your funeral," he mumbled, but something in their eyes caught his attention, a glint of unyielding determination that spoke volumes.

As Rex turned to leave, the tremors of battle echoed faintly through the walls.

The Dravok brothers faced Lukas, their expressions unflinching. Shadows writhed around Lukas like living creatures, coiling and snapping at the air. His twisted grin widened. "You think you two can stop me? You're nothing more than footnotes in my ascension."

"You talk too much," Austine growled, his voice rumbling like a beast's snarl.

Austine and Javen were orphans, abandoned as children in the war-torn outskirts of Astral City. They had survived on scraps, dodging soldiers and monsters alike. Austine, the protector, had always shielded his younger brother, his beast transformation awakening at an early age to fend off threats. Meanwhile, Javen, the strategist, used his intelligence to outwit foes, setting traps and guiding them through countless perilous situations.

It was their bond, an unbreakable connection forged in suffering and survival that had made them strong.

"Javen," Austine said quietly, his claws digging into the ground. "We stick to the plan."

Javen nodded, his glowing summoning circle pulsating beneath him. "Stick to the plan."

Lukas lunged forward, his body a blur of shadows and metal. His obsidian blade slashed through the air with a deadly whistle, aimed directly at Austine. But Austine met him head-on, his claws locking with the blade in a shower of sparks.

"You've got some strength," Lukas sneered, pushing against Austine. "But strength alone won't save you."

"Good thing I've got more than that," Austine replied, shoving Lukas back with a surge of brute force.

From behind, Javen's summoning circle flared. "Now!" he shouted. A massive ethereal wolf burst from the ground, its glowing blue eyes locking onto Lukas. The beast lunged with a snarl, jaws snapping at Lukas' arm.

Lukas twisted, shadows coiling around him to deflect the attack. "Cute trick," he mocked, slamming his metallic fist into the wolf. The summoned creature dissipated into light, but Javen was already weaving another spell.

Austine took the opportunity to dash forward, his claws raking across Lukas' armor. Sparks flew as the beast-like soldier landed a series of rapid strikes, forcing Lukas to retreat.

"You're starting to annoy me," Lukas growled, his crimson eyes flaring. The shadows around him expanded, forming jagged spikes that shot toward the brothers like a hailstorm.

Austine dodged with beastly agility, flipping and twisting through the onslaught. Javen wasn't as fast, but his summons shielded him—a towering stone golem materialized in front of him, taking the brunt of the attack.

"Is that all you've got?" Austine taunted, but his smirk faltered as Lukas appeared behind him in a burst of shadow teleportation.

"You're predictable," Lukas hissed, slamming a metal-encased fist into Austine's back. The impact sent him crashing into a wall, cracks spiderwebbing out from where he landed.

"Austine!" Javen yelled, but he had no time to check on his brother. Lukas was already moving toward him, his blade slicing through the air.

Javen gritted his teeth, frantically tracing a new summoning circle in the air. The glowing lines pulsed with fiery energy as he poured every ounce of his mana into the spell. "You want a fight, Lukas? Then face this!"

The circle exploded with light, and from its center emerged a massive drake, its scales shimmering like molten lava. Flames licked at its nostrils, and its eyes burned with a predatory intelligence. The drake let out a deafening roar, its wings spreading wide as it dwarfed the battlefield.

Lukas skidded to a halt, his crimson eyes narrowing as he evaluated the new threat. "Now that's more like it," he said, a dark grin spreading across his face.

The drake wasted no time, launching a torrent of blazing fire directly at Lukas. The heat was intense, the flames melting the nearby floor tiles into bubbling pools of molten slag. Lukas darted to the side, shadows enveloping him as he barely avoided the inferno.

Javen barked commands at the drake, its movements synchronizing with his gestures. "Keep him on the defensive! Don't let him counter!"

Austine staggered to his feet, shaking off the dust from his crash. His claws reformed with a metallic sheen, and his eyes glowed with feral intensity. "Nice one, Javen. Let's finish this!"

The drake lunged, its massive claws swiping at Lukas. He raised his obsidian blade to block, but the sheer force of the drake's attack sent him sliding backward. Shadows coiled around Lukas as he retaliated, sending razor-sharp tendrils toward the beast. The drake roared in defiance, its fiery aura incinerating the shadows before they could reach it.

Austine seized the opportunity, charging at Lukas from the side. His claws slashed in a flurry, each strike aimed at finding a weak point in Lukas' defenses. Lukas blocked with his blade, but Austine's relentless assault kept him pinned.

Javen focused on maintaining the drake's presence, his mana reserves depleting rapidly. "Austine, don't let up! He's weakening!"

Lukas, however, refused to be overwhelmed. He slammed his blade into the ground, sending a shockwave of shadow energy outward. The force knocked Austine back and staggered the drake, giving Lukas a moment to breathe.

"You're all just insects to me," Lukas snarled, his voice dripping with malice. He extended a hand, and the shadows around him thickened, forming into a massive spear of pure darkness. "Let's see how your pet handles this."

He hurled the shadow spear with devastating force. The drake roared and countered with a torrent of fire, the two attacks colliding in a brilliant explosion. The shockwave rippled through the room, forcing everyone to shield their eyes.

When the dust settled, the drake was still standing, though scorch marks marred its scales. Its fiery eyes burned brighter as it charged at Lukas again, its jaws snapping inches from his face.

Austine joined the fray, leaping onto the drake's back and using its massive frame as a platform. With a feral roar, he launched himself at Lukas, claws extended.

"You're finished!" Austine roared, his claws glowing with a fiery aura as he struck.

Lukas caught the attack with his blade, but the sheer force drove him to one knee. His grin faltered for the first time. "This isn't enough! You'll need more than this!"

Javen, sweat pouring down his face, smirked from the sidelines. "It's not just enough. It's overkill." He raised his hand, signaling the drake to unleash its most powerful attack.

The drake reared back, flames gathering in its throat. The air grew unbearably hot as it prepared to unleash a devastating inferno. Lukas' eyes widened as he realized the sheer scale of the attack.

"Burn him!" Javen commanded.

The drake unleashed a massive wave of fire, engulfing the battlefield in a blinding blaze. The heat was suffocating, the flames consuming everything in their path.

For a moment, silence reigned, broken only by the crackling of flames.

But as the fire subsided, Lukas stood in the center of the scorched battlefield, his form barely recognizable as he gasped for breath. Suddenly, instead of him collapsing, his form disintegrated into thin air, startling the brothers

"What's... that?!" Javen gasped.

Suddenly, their communicator rang out and Javen answered

"Daven! Do you copy?!"

"Yes sir!" Javen replied.

"Return back to HQ, Captain Arris is safe. He was transported here through a crystal. We don't know who did this! Any report from your side?"

"Yes sir! We just fended off an enemy assassin! The nobles are both protected and we all the students are in the safehouse under the protection of the staff!"

"Return to HQ now! Our mission in the academy is over!"
